Pleasing

Is there anyone who doesn't find pebbles to be pleasing?
I love the thought of them being tumbled to smoothness by rivers or seas. I love the variability of colour and veining. I love the non-symmetry.
It's like the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem "Pied Beauty", except that these are things that could, if machine-made, be all the same, smoothly even and perfect, but they are not. They vary within their similarity. That's what I like. Each one is unique.

I also like to see the pine cones among the pebbles. Something else round and infinitely variable within the similarity.

I have a favourite black pebble, more like a rock, that I found on a college class bus trip abot50 years ago. It may be a glacial remnant. I keep it close. Am touching it right now. It's always cool. AND I liked the chance to reread Pied Piper,
