The need to move and work in the fresh air!
I was brushcutting, which is fairy heavy duty stuff for a Crone. Four and a half hours of it! Good going!
While I was there, I visited some of my Sentinel Trees - with my Woodland Trust hat on. And made a new friend.
Actually, I am not sure friend is the right word.
This tree is very heavily shaded - an oak - and has very few live branches with leaves. But isn't is dramatic??
Even more dramatic was what I found at its base.
Woodpecker feathers and a whole load of bones.
Someone favours this spot for fine dining.
When I got home, I heard a hullaballoo in the garden. The squirrel was shouting and the magpies - three pairs of them - where in constant and loud vocal complaint. Turned out two crows were in next door's sycamore tree. I have been hearing these squeaking whistling calls which I guessed must be baby birds - though I'd have thought (this is now 7th August) that it would have been too late for them. I wonder if the crows were after them? If so, why was the squirrel so upset? Anyway, I banged on the hedge and the crows departed.
So I went to feed them - one of the Driveways had taken to perching on my house as I had not been able to get to the park for a few days. While there, I saw Droopy and Three and one of the Divines, that was it.
Then I saw this.
A woman came past with a pram and scared her away.
I admire your brushcutting stamina! Yes that oak structure is dramatically revealed. I suppose it lost leaves as the other trees grew (?) I suppose the squirrel was annoyed by the birds. Or maybe concerned that he should add to what were probably warning cries. Quite a ruckus (good word - just felt like adding it ;-) ) Did you say the big bird on the roof was a kite? So lots of things happening and creatures to see.
