A highlight of 2021

Here's me worried about my global footprint celebrating a diesel-engined bit of motor tech.

I've done about 120,000 miles in Simba since we got together in May 2017 I think it was. I need to plant a hell of a lot of trees to counter all those diesel emissions. Instead I feel squirrels. Look, you may say that I give them peanuts and distract them from their important acorn-planting duties, but I say I help there to be more squirrels planting trees. And besides, there are no oak trees round here.

Talking of squirrels, I was looking at pictures of the red ones. Super cute. I think I used to see them as a kid but I don't actually remember ever having seen one. People want to kill the greys to enhance the chances of the reds as the greys are an invasive species. The argument is further justified by claims that greys kill reds and damage trees.

Greys do not kill reds. Greys carry a virus that they are resistant to but reds are not.

Greys do occasionally damage trees - at particular times, notably when females are lactating and/or when other food sources are scarce. But so do reds.

Reds and greys seem to fit almost the same ecological niche - though reds seem to prefer firs and greys like mixed woodland and the edge of woodland.

Seems to me that it makes little difference which squirrels are around so long as squirrels do squirrel things and are not harassed by people.

It seems a shame that the less cute but more-likely-to-survive squirrel can be killed as a pest when we have so few wild animals around. Don't you think they should all be special?

Anyway.

I didn't set out to write about squirrels.

This time of year is always busy for me. Take today. I stupidly thought I could work on animals for a few hours and instead discovered that I needed to go through a few hours worth of scripts about football.

It's a shame as I think I felt (brace yourself) almost happy earlier. So much for that.
