First up, the tiny squirrel is still harassing the Unbraves.
He really is tiny. And really is feisty.
Two: my favourite oak tree at the Reserve. Well, in this part of the Reserve. I was pretty sure I could climb into the fork in the branches. maybe I could have but I was scared of slipping and breaking an ankle or something. What I need is a small ladder. Or some rope. Or that squirrel's courage. Or indeed his physique.
Now for a tree in a wood I was surveying. An ash. Or, half of an ash.
The fungus is Dryad's Saddle. I think.
I found another, equally large and equally torn apart on the other side of the wood.
It's quite something to see these giants. That second one, the bug-eaten innards, the fractures in that fallen half. It's all too... painful. This part of the wood is nearly all ash. Fifty years and will any remain? Sadly, many of the young trees, or small trees, in the area are elms. They usually succumb once they reach a certain height.
At least no signs of Acute Oak Decline - which brings me back to that oak on the Reserve. All around it are trees with AOD. So far, about five or six. Two are in a really bad state.
It's depressing. If not quite as depressing as tomorrow's post. You've been warned.
