Yay! Yippee! We made it this far, baby, and we'll get through the rest.
I was thinking of something as I meditated today and thought, 'Oh! I must write a blog post about that!' Yeah. Gone. Just like that tapping on the steering wheel thing.
It might have been something like this - I reckon that philosophy is like a list of flavours whereas life is like tasting the actual food. The philosopher reckons that because he knows there is blackcurrant, tannin, leather, cherry blossom, caramel and an edge of vanilla in that wine, he's a fucking sommelier. But give him the wine and he'll be as taste-denuded as the rest of us.
The examined LIFE would be a very good thing. To be an actual sommelier of life, But examined thoughts about life are like reading the sommelier's report and never having a glass of wine ever.
Now it's true that many of the ethics guys have been doctors. Yep. But they're making decisions for PATIENTS. They talk of the poor or the animals but they don't know what it's like to be them.
Mind you, when they do know what it's like - think female feminists philosophers and gay queer theorists and transgender transgender philosophers - then they seem to forget that there are other people and morally considerable beings who aren't in these categories. The straight white men ones think they're normal. The identity politics ones think they're special. The rest of life doesn't get a bloody look in.
So, as the days lengthen, it'll be interesting to see if I remain as cynical about this project of examining 'life'.
