Failures with trees

After loving The Treeline, I listened to Diana Beresford-Kroeger's To Speak for the Trees. It was not what I thought, more of an autobiography. She, by the way, had a dreadful start in life, but plentiful gifts - like being immensely clever and talented. And, as it turns out, she owns some land where Companion Crow resides and has been planting trees there. Which I thought was rather exciting. Overall, the result was that - as well as wanting to study trees - I want to plant trees.

I asked my dad if we could plant trees in the small bit of Devon land he owns and he said yes. So I got all excited about native species and started researching. Only to discover that had I come up with this idea a few months ago, I could have got 70 free trees, native to Devon. Great. Still, there might be support for tree planting. I need to ask my brother though.

I had seen on the Woodland Trust website that they want to track down ancient trees and so I decided to add this.

The words are the 'what 3 words' that identify the exact location of this oak. The girth of the trunk must be four and a half metres. At least. But it turns out it's not ancient enough.

After that, tree-life got better.

I saw the stump of a tree and inspected it to see what was growing... Fungi...

More fungi...

But also, perhaps, new shoots of tree?

Shame about the focus...

Anyhoo, I saw that the landowners have planted standard trees in their new hedge. I think they are all oaks.

Finally, I listened to the trees by three stream and they spoke to me again. But the beeches did not speak. Three trees of another species spoke. And they, judging by their buds, are ashes. I sent them blessings.

The stand of trees is on the front page of this post.
