My trot took me along tracks I had not traveled for some years. A chance to check out a badger sett (one new hole but I could not find many of the older ones as they were covered with poppies- as you will see).
Yes, the poppies. It was quite remarkable how many there were. This field has always had poppies, maybe there were this many before.
What was most remarkable about it was the buzzing! there were so very many creatures feasting on the poppies.
I was happy about that... until I started wondering what the farmer might have sprayed on the crop of oil seed rape right next to the strip of set-aside land. I hope the creatures are not getting dosed with something that will harm their longer-term prospects.
As well as the poppies there were chicory flowers...
... and ox-eye daisies.

I've just finished listening to David George Haskell's flower book. It is very good and fascinating. The final chapter offers ways to explore flowers. That section, I wish I had in print.
