In the wildwood

I returned to the wood where I met all the Wych Elms and listened to the birds. So many! Including a Marsh Tit and a Treecreeper - both of which I saw.

When I went in, there were PEOPLE in the wood. It's private land so I was scared they were something to do with the estate. They were loud and laughing - two or three women. They left, sneaking out as I had sneaked in, but more volubly, and I went to see where they had been but couldn't tell why they'd been there.

I found a newly dug hole... not sure who lives there - but I didn't think it was what had attracted the people.

The wood feels as though it's been left for years - no trees cut or management of any sort. There's a nice variation of heights below the high canopy, made up mainly of Ash and some Oaks and Scots Pines. The Elms have managed more height than in the hedgerows.

Not much vegetation until you go out to the overgrown ride - and there the grass has out-competed any flowers, it seems.

Once the women had gone, it was very peaceful - apart from some airplanes.
