Writer's picture: CroneCrone

What do you think this is? The surface of a planet? Something under the sea?

It's a stone in a wall. I know, not that exciting.

But it's funny how unhinged you can feel faced with an abstraction.

All those p and not-p thoughts unable to hitch themselves onto anything.

We don't really like that experience, I think. We like to have control, as much control as well can. To fit things into an existing schema. To remain unsurprised by reality.

How boring of us.

We lose opportunities for wonder... or make wonder only possible in extreme situations... whereas a child can be in awe at the sight of a puddle, a modern human needs to travel across the world... but even then, all the pictures they've seen and films they've watched about the great deserts or jungles have put all those p and not-p thoughts in place. It's still not entirely new. Nothing is new to our world weary brains.

We have disenchanted the world. We'd rather be comfortable the willing to risk discomfort for the sake of wonder.
