It's funny that last year, when I was so engaged with Bobbit, I kind of missed any other robin activity... or maybe he kept the other robins away? I do remember seeing him chasing off an adult and a few times seeing a younger fledgling.
Without him, and the brave Tengu, my videos and photos are less intimate and the "feeling" I have of being a part of their world is slighter. These robins watch me with caution. It's interesting, the feeling of being seen as threat, obstacle, unwanted presence versus the feeling of being seen as another agential being in the world. While I was walking in Kew Gardens (more on that in a later post) I stood and watched one of those Eqyptian geese. Well, two adults and three large youngsters. One parent eyed me as the young made their little whistling noises, then the parent resumed grazing. I tried whistling, and each time the goose reacted. Finally, she (I think it was the mother) stopped and looked at me dead on. There was something in that look. I felt a delicate tendril of connection. Later, I had a momentary similar vibe from a crow. But not with these robins. They are very wary.
Some of those pictures may be familiar from earlier posts, but I wanted to share the video. I am glad to see the little ones.
Here, the following day, a video of various redbreasted characters. What I missed was some chasing and scuffling. I am not sure if there is a debate going on about who should hold this space. No one sings in my garden, but various robins do feed there.
They seem to be antagonised as much by the jay as by the cats.
And, again, various different robins visiting the feeders. One with a similar disturbance of the feathers to Bobbit, but not him.
Neat vid of the 4 robins plus. Especially impressed by the fledgling swallowing the entire pellet! Yes, strange to see the robin with the roughened back feathers. Interesting what you said about the jay bothering the robins more than the cats. If noone sings, does that mean all the visiting robins are females? Robin Story vid -- strange what the baby on the fence does!! stretching a wing ?or tail ? can't really make it out. Good to see Mottled Breast again. Yes, fun to see the young ones. Fun to see them all - pigeon, everyone. Interesting what you say about the robins being wary. I know with crows, it's neat when an eye connection is made (if the…
