The blackbird revelation

You will have noticed that there's been very little mention of the blackbirds. I have heard them a few times, and seen blackbird-shaped darkness in the honeysuckle, but here was an actual sighting.

At first I thought this was a youngster, but then I believed it was Mrs B part way through her molt. After that, I went back to the fledgling idea... as Mrs B surely had a fully yellow beak? I think adult beaks are fully yellow.

I met an avid birder the other day and she confirmed that she has noticed evidence of late broods. She said the birds might have added in an extra clutch in the warm weather. I suggested they might have been making up for a poor success rate early in the year, thinking of my robins, and, generally, of the absence of young birds in early summer.

Whoever she is, she needs to do something about her head feathers. They often seem to come last with blackbirds.

Interestingly, while the robins now look dapper again, the dunnocks remain in the midst of their change-over. I wonder what determines the timings?
