The cost of conservation

So, here's evidence that I am, in actual fact, a liability.

I know: tell us something we don't know.

I was for the first time ever running a task on my own and our most loyal and dedicated volunteer was injured. I will not go into the details, because I will get upset. Of course it was an accident, but in retrospect you always see all the things you could have done to ensure that that particular accident did not happen. It's so damn obvious in retrospect.

Usually, I injure myself. That's been my story for 51 years, 9 months and 17 days. Why did this plot twist have to happen?

The task was to clear the scrub that was starting to block the path and 'raise the crowns' of the trees so that vehicles could pass underneath.

After taking the wounded volunteer back to the Lodge, I persuaded the other kind man to come back out with me in the hope I could work off my distress. I was able to focus on getting myself thoroughly sliced by blackthorn for two hours which sort of helped. Until I stopped and began to think through all the darn counter-factuals.

In the end, we cleared the track at the back of Block 5 pretty well.

But I wish the day had been different.

Oh - we did see a kestrel catch a mouse. That was something.

You are not a crone, you are not a liability, you are a very talented and beautiful lady. It was not a plot twist, it was an accident, plain and simple. Big (virtual) hugs heading your way x

The work you folks did looks very neat and tidy. And does a kestrel dive down from the air, or was it perched on something, waiting?

Replying to

It was on a branch (that we hadn't cut down) and just casually flew into the field and then returned to the branch with its dinner!
