The fairy ring

I'd like to have something magical and memorable to say. Words that would ring true and settle in the soul like a new part of the self, cosying in like cats into a duvet and purring, shut-eyed in peaceful pleasure.

I'd like to inspire awe and wonder with some suggestive depiction of the openness and mystery of things. Words that could fire up a vision and turn a mind into a mass of sizzling neurons, excitable in an all-new system, burning into the brain a vision of hope.

I'd like to be able to tell a story of intricacy and profundity, in which all the characters live as vibrantly as those people you meet in real life, all have the complexity and contradictions, the vices and virtues, the depths and shallowness, all that richness of vulnerability and strength which makes each person irreplaceable and precious.

I'd like to weave a spell that heals broken hearts and creates courage. Some wizardry of language and image that could send Dorothy home.

But I cant. So I pass on this, a fairy ring in winter light. The strangeness of green spaces in dull places.
