Woodwalton Fen

I'd driven east to see my father and it seemed like a good opportunity to revisit Woodwalton. I went there some years ago on a bat survey.

Seeing marsh harriers, a pair, was my highlight, but there was also a roe doe and her fawn.

I sat by a wonderful oak with a split right down its middle, and a huge wound where a branch had fallen off some years ago. There was a large fungal fruiting body at the top of the old wound - and, as the bottom, a twig, a new branch coming into being.

The resilience of oaks!

The tracks in the Fen were still green. How the peat holds water. Ah, all that we have lost! All that we have destroyed! That said, the Great Fen Project is gradually returning some of this land to its former glory.
