Big city birds

I haven't only seen trees in town, there've been a few flying people too - and not just floating around on the river.

This Egyptian goose was outside the main entrance to Kew Gardens. Attractive birds. I remember that I saw them at Ickworth when I visited the ancient trees back in January or whenever it was.

I have heard robins, wrens, blackbirds, tits and the ring necked parakeets, but the pigeons and corvids are easiest to spot. I figure that these two are siblings, waiting for their parents.

And, my favourites, the crows.

I've been reading Fire Weather by John Vaillant, which is the story of the 2016 Fort McMurray Fire. The book covers the disaster but also the history of destructive fires, the fossil fuel industry, climate change and climate science. It's a tale of 8 billion blinkered people walking into the apocalypse. Meanwhile, as i write, the General Election campaigning is on-going, folk are talking of holidays abroad, cars go past and planes fly overhead at two-minute intervals, there's a sporting gathering in Germany and an even larger one on the way in France... while in a forest somewhere, sparks will be flying.

I found myself virtually in tears today (June 14th) as someone told me that Labour have downscaled their climate promises. It's all about cost of living and fuel security. Oh yes, let's make sure we have a reliable source of cheap gas while the trees burn and the scorched birds tumble to the ground like embers.

Glad to get the bird report! I like those two magpies :-) And also thanks for the mention of "Fire Weather". That's interesting because it's a reminder that I heard him interviewed last year. I'd like to find out more what he says in that book. And I looked at a list of his other books, and I see that he also wrote "The Tiger" which you told me about earlier. And I see that my library carries both books.
