Difference

Another 'found' thing... broken Bic plus blue T-Rex. What could that mean?

The hunger to write? Power is in the pen not the sword? Dinosaurs ate ballpoints not beefsteaks? I don't know. Maybe just, 'Write about me.'

I have nothing to say about dinosaurs. But I have been thinking about difference - and dinosaurs, let's face it, are pretty different from you and me. For a start, they're extinct. We are not. Yet.

But anyway, to get back to the point.

I was thinking about relationships and how good it is to be close to people who are different.

As an obvious starting point, those brought up in multicultural environments are less likely to have implicit biases against those with different skin colours.

Beyond that, though, if you like and respect a person who happens to be, say, a Conservative, you realise that a) not all Conservatives are selfish spawn of satan and b) that Conservatives might just be right about some things. Maybe. More importantly, you come to learn that, mirabile dictu, you are not omniscient and are not always right.

It seems that when many people are seeking partners or even friends, they are seeking for someone like themselves - could there be some narcissism here? Of course, there is the claim that 'having things in common' is advantageous in relationships. That is certainly true. But how much? And maybe the areas where there are differences are the areas which allow one to grow. Besides which, what is so damn fine about 'the sort of person' that one is that makes one seek a 'person like oneself'? It does rather suggest that one doesn't just accept one's own ideas and beliefs and ways of being but thinks that, all things considered, they are the best. This seems to me to be unlikely. But by associating only or primarily with those who share one's views, one can reinforce one's narcissism and prejudices.

So, I say, seek out dinosaurs.
