Garden doings and beings

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

I have an excess of images, but also some stories.

Bobbit is still singing a lot, but also carrying suet pellets to the hedge by the pub. Given that at this point (24th April) the blackbirds have fledged young, the robins should be well on the way.

I saw Mrs Mohican Blue carrying a feather into the bird box, though, so I guess she isn't as far along. Mischa says that's because the tits only have one brood, while many of the others have two or even three. Len Howard's tits had two or three, but maybe times have changed for tits.

I saw Mr B feeding one of the babies - but I also saw the extra male blackbird in the garden. I am not sure which one this is.

Ah yes. The robins. Today I thought I saw a pair in the front lilac who were chased away by Bobbit... all of which made me doubt all my robin identifications. But they went north, while I am sure I have seen another robin fly to the hedge by the pub and this one had a black mark on its face, which I did not see on the two robins today... so maybe this really is Tiny?

It looks here as though Mrs MB has hair in her beak. Nice to weave a nest together.

One morning, in the garden, when the neighbour was I think slapping a rug - like people used to do in olden times (!) - I saw an orange shape run behind the garden and stop. Fox! I thought. Then, Ginger cat? But I could make out a black nose and when he turned to go I saw him scale a fence and yes, it was the fox!

I went out to feed him that night when I got back from work only to be greeting by two courting hedgehogs. Huff! Huff! from the female as the male tried to circle her. I had the red light torch and they didn't notice me. I couldn't pass them to leave the food so I stepped back, but when the heard the food as I dropped it on the path, the female scuttled away while the male stood there. What are YOU looking at?

The next morning, the food was gone. And the fox had had a shit in the bird food saucer.
