When I was a kid I used to get awful headaches. That's when I started taking codeine. Not often... for a few days one week then not for a month or so.. I think. The pain used to drive me mad. I said it felt like a vice around my forehead or a herd of deer stampeding around inside my skull.
Over the past year I have had four bad spells of headaches. This is more frequent than at any time I can recall. This time, the headaches only started after ten days of feeling ill. I thought I was just tired. So I slept. Then I thought I was menopausal so I invested in a cornucopia of herbal remedies for the big end to the Crone's useless reproductive potential. But they have not made a difference. Instead, the headaches kicked in, like pissed off mules on steroids.
A friend who lives locally says she, her little girls and her husband have all had a non-corona-virus that made her feel very tired, grotty and achy. I thought it might be that.
Now I think it's everything with headaches on top.
The rain has been falling for three weeks. It's like we are now in a monsoon zone. Before the rain started, I'd never seen the land so dry at that time of year. We'd had no rain to speak of for a month or more. Last summer was dry as a camel's tongue in a sandstorm, but the autumn was a write-off - I was starting on my ark. Me and Jab, Buj and Wuj, laptop and phone, we're off.
Still, at the end of a run in which the dog and I got soaked to the skin, the sun came out and sparkled on a stream the rain had made on the road. Starlight in daylight. And the flashes in my skull briefly ceased.
