Isaiah Berlin wrote a piece about Tolstoy in which he referred to the fox, who knows many things, and the hedgehog, who knows one big thing. He was considering thinkers - as, yes, you've guessed it, generalists or specialists. Berlin said he wrote the article as a kind of game, a bit of play, but it still sheds light on things.
He decided Tolstoy was a fox who wanted to be a hedgehog, and that this caused him great pain. Yeah, I get it, Leo: me too!!
