The mighty oak

The oaks have suffered in the drought - they have shed their acorns early.

At the Reserve, one dropped a branch. Mischa says they do it when they are stressed.

Even so, this little fellow has survived the drought.

Perhaps, in adult trees - as well as deep roots, the dark green leaves protect them from the sun or something. Their leaves are thick... maybe they transpire less and preserve more water?

Contrast the oaks on the left with the background copse, where oaks line the plantation and within the poplars have shed most of their leaves.

Maybe this angle is better.

Another angle - the oaks on the left again and the poplars above oaks, field maple, some ash and straggly field elm on the right - with oaks and sycamores at the far right.

In the copse, I saw bees flying into the dead wood which lies in front of my sad looking tree. You might see them on this brief video.

I don't know what kind of bee - I know carpenter bees nest in dead wood, but they are solitary and I saw several bees go inside. I need to ask an expert!
