The ultimate tiny

Almost. Actually, goldcrests are the smallest birds in this country. Wrens are the most common.

I managed to capture a blast of song in this video.

And in this one coming up, I guess the wren was foraging in my jammed up gutters. For a while I wondered if he was nest-building under there. A wren built a nest under the eaves, above my bathroom window in 2020. the males build a few nests and the females choose their home from among them, and, I think, thereby choose their mate. The female was satisfied with that home in 2020 and I could hear the baby chicks and see the birds' silhouettes through the window. If I sat in the conservatory I could watch them fly back and forth to feed the babies. A male gave it a revamp in 2021 or 2022 but the females were not impressed.

Given all the alarm calls from the male and his singing (he flies from perch to perch across three gardens - the same as Bobbit's "territory" - but he uses more perches and stays for a very short time in each one) I think he must have at least built a nest (I'm writing on 20th March) or two. I don't know where and don't want to know in case my attention upsets him. He didn't like the camera much.

I love these little birds. They are so brave - I remember the one at the old church coming quite close to warn me away. And they have to collect so many insects for their brood. The amount of energy they expend. And such a loud voice for such a tiny person.

All this is nearly a month old. They'll have chicks by the time you read this!!! Well, eggs, at any rate.

Very interesting! And cute, cute, cute. The wrens have that distinctive held up tail! Realized that I wasn't sure about their occurrence where I live, and that I haven't knowingly seen them. It turns out there is a common wren species here. Maybe they mostly live in the woods. I will check with my sister the birder :-) Here's a good write-up about yours. They call it an "avian dynamo". Ha! https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eurasian_Wren/overview

Wonderful that you're following all of this (and posting about the birdies etc). Do you have a sense of this spring weather-wise and trees leafing out compared to last year? I find it hard to remember and I never quite remember to record things. I think our crocuses bloomed earlier than last year. Hurrah for the Baby Black Bird 😃
