Tree hugger's paradise

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

No days off allowing exploration at leisure, instead I took advantage of reduced price entry after 4pm when I had done an early shift. I mainly followed the Remarkable Trees Trail... though I have to say that the map wasn't entirely reliable and so I found myself walking in circles trying to find a tree that wasn't where it appeared to be.

These Standing People had me in absolute awe. The black locust and the mountain gum, the incredible oaks... The stories behind some of the trees. Like the Wollemi pine that had been believed to have died out two million years ago until a small population were found in Australia. There are fewer than 100 living in the wild.

There seemed to be complete freedom in the Gardens... you could pretty much walk anywhere. You could bring in a picnic. Yet people seemed to behave in a sense as though they felt the awe of being in a cathedral to the botanic.

Taking that license as permission of lie down under an oak and do a spot of journeying, I asked to visit the Forgotten King and Vapour Queen. The sense I had was that I have the connection and the passion... what I need is a direction, a focus, a subject. A drum to bang. I was hoping they'd tell me, but I was too distracted by the ants biting me.

Extraordinary slide show! Thank you. I'm so glad you made a point of exploring and visiting the Standing People.

(Too bad about the ants 😉)
