Welcome the winter chill

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

It's beautiful when the ground is glazed with frost and the valleys deep in mist with an Alpine blue sky above.

The old muscles seemed to object to movement though in the cold weather. Jabi was happy. His winter coat comes into its own at this time of year.

My new meditation device has arrived. A Muse headset. So, I was thinking, I've got these headaches and the physio's all about how I need to learn to relax (blah blah). And I thought, but I bloody meditate! I figured I couldn't be meditating right. I invested a significant sum (before the Black Friday sale - well done, Crone, another top tip for the kids) in this thing that reads your brainwaves and gives you feedback on how calm you are. Don't ask me how it knows - something to do with alpha and beta waves. I should find out really.

Basically, you're listening to gentle rain and when you are calm birds start singing. If you get distracted the rain gets more intense. Turns out I spend more than 60% of my meditation in a calm state.

SO WHY AREN'T I CALM???

To be fair, I've only done two three-minute meditations and one ten-minute one, but in each case I was calm for pretty much two thirds of the session.

Maybe I was specially focused given the thrill of a new bit of tech?

The result of this 11 minutes of proper calm was.... the worst insomnia for about ten days or two weeks. Great. Just brilliant.

UPDATE

I used Muse again - 15 minutes with 9 minutes in calm - and this was after no sleep, early start, 150 mile drive, day at work with 'activating boss' and the dog whining in a really really irritating way for 14 of the 15 minutes. BUT my headache went during the session.... hmmmmmm....
