Pebbles

While running through the village I spotted these painted pebbles on the edge of the pavement. There was a long line of them running along the bottom of a garden wall outside one of the terraced cottages.

Sweet, to decorate outside their own garden, for the pleasure of passers by.

I read today that there are three good reasons for wearing a mask while jogging: to protect yourself; to protect others (as those exercising exhale with greater force than those walking) and for solidarity.

But I had just attended an online applied ethics discussion where the value of solidarity was questioned. It seems that ideas deemed to ignore this value (such as selective lockdown for those over 50) can't get published in journals. This means that some solutions to the social and economic problems are immediately disregarded, even if they might support other values say, freedom and an appreciation of life years and the costs of the general lockdown to healthcare as well as the economy) just because they value to hold sacred the value of solidarity.

This is interesting in a country run by a party whose 'greatest' leader said 'there is no such thing as society - only individual men and women'.

The thing is that solidarity maybe isn't purely abut equal treatment.... maybe solidarity should be about all having appropriate treatment? And this, after all, is how societies on the whole are run: I mean, women don't complain they don't get prostate checks and adults don't have to go to school.

All that said, the Crone does not wish to be denied the opportunity to go out to work. Therefore, yay! Solidarity!!!
