For about six months I have resisted reading Eva Meijer’s When animals speak: Towards an interspecies democracy. Part of the reason is that I am rather jealous of Eva Meijer. She is a philosopher as well as an artist, writer and singer-songwriter. Seriously. How annoying is that? She has published novels, short stories and poems. She’s released four albums. She’s won awards. She has rats. And I attended a conference she convened and I didn’t really think I liked her.
Anyway, her stupid book is really good.
And her view of animal ethics also – so far – makes complete sense to me.
This is the fourth book I have come across recently that I think is great. Here are the others:
The Whale Warriors by Peter Heller. This is about a Sea Shepherd mission to stop Japanese whaling ships. Adventure on the high seas. It’s moving, shocking, and doesn’t tell you what to think – excellent journalism.
Wild Souls by Emma Marris. I haven’t finished this, but it’s very thought provoking. I’m hoping it’ll help with my predator problem.
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. This is a novel and it’s smashing. My friend Francesca recommended it and I am so glad. This is highly recommended!!
